We build the translation layer — and the board packet that comes with it. Fractional finance and systems for animal welfare nonprofits $1M–$5M.

Every system, every workflow, every report is designed for organizations that protect animals.
Municipal and private shelters with intake tracking and adoption fee accounting
Foster-based rescues managing restricted grants and volunteer expenses
Rehabilitation centers with complex vet cost tracking and seasonal funding
Multi-state networks needing consolidated reporting across jurisdictions
Most small shelters have the first block and the third block. What they don't have is the layer in between — the thing that turns kennel cards and intake records into functional expense reporting, grant performance, and a board packet that actually answers questions.
These are the patterns we see in every first conversation with a new client.
Financial operations held together with pivot tables and the ED's personal laptop.
Three months behind on reconciliation. Always reacting, never planning.
Form 990 filed late with errors. State registrations lapsing. Constant stress.
Board members can't get reliable numbers. Finance committee meetings are painful.
Restricted vs. unrestricted funds commingled. Grant reports take weeks.
The ED spends 15+ hours per week on financial firefighting instead of saving animals.
Every engagement is scoped to your organization. Here's the menu.
Ongoing finance ops, reporting, board-grade monthly close.
30-point review of COA hygiene, systems, compliance posture.
Shelterluv/PetPoint/ASM to QBO/Sage integration + COA rebuild.
Board-ready multi-year financial plan.
We don't do restaurants or tech startups. Every workflow is built for animal orgs.
Every engagement runs through the founder — Davis Starling, CPA candidate (licensure Oct 2026). No account managers, no handoffs.
Multi-factor authentication on every login, role-based access controls, and secure infrastructure.
Automated workflows, AI-assisted categorization, real-time dashboards.
We flag issues before they become problems. Regs changed? You're already updated.
Every dollar we save you goes back to your mission. That's the whole point.
Davis has spent his career on full-cycle accounting, ERP onboarding, and chart of accounts standardization across multi-entity organizations. Animal Kingdom Accounting is the systems-and-finance practice he built to solve the specific problems animal welfare nonprofits run into every day.
From startup rescues running on spreadsheets to established shelters managing grant portfolios, Davis brings the same meticulous attention to detail and genuine investment in the mission to every engagement.
We're building a small set of free tools for animal welfare nonprofits — a 990 health check, a runway calculator, and a finance-systems self-assessment. They'll launch once we have client capacity to support them.
Monthly insights on nonprofit finance, grant compliance, and regulatory changes.
Every engagement is tailored to your organization's size, complexity, and goals.
Monthly close, bank reconciliation, P&L, balance sheet, chart of accounts.
Form 990 preparation, 1099s, and state charitable registrations.
Restricted vs. unrestricted fund management, funder reports, audit prep.
Cash flow forecasting, budget-to-actual, KPI dashboards, board packages.
We scope each engagement to your organization's needs. From monthly bookkeeping to full CFO advisory, payroll processing, software migration, and grant budget development.
Animal Kingdom Accounting exists because small animal welfare organizations deserve serious financial infrastructure without the enterprise price tag. AKA was built to translate enterprise-grade systems work — multi-entity tax, ERP migrations, AI-assisted automation — into something a small shelter can actually run on.
Davis is currently Accounting and Finance Manager at E.J. Bryant Logging Company (4y9m of progressive responsibility, since September 2021), where he oversees an $800K annual budget, achieved a 5-business-day year-end close for FY2025, increased A/R turnover 21% YoY, raised non-delinquent vendor payment rates from 79% to 98%, and built EJAI — an in-house n8n + Ollama agent system streamlining clerical workflow handoffs and report generation. Through May 2026 he was also Staff (Tax) Accountant at WithMe Inc. in Chicago, where he developed a 750+ account chart of accounts across 3 entities for QBO + Abacum migration, built ASC 606 deferred revenue models for 280 clients shifting from cash to accrual basis, and shipped automation tooling that took the team's month-end close from 30 days down to 7.
Prior to those roles, Davis served as Tax and Treasury Associate at Sonoco (Feb 2024 – Aug 2025), where he reviewed Forms 5471, 8865, 8992, and 8993 to optimize GILTI payment strategy across 56+ international entities, assisted with Forms 1065 and 1120 across 230+ US entities through two busy seasons, performed credit analysis on partner accounts ranging $50K to $2.5B+, and built Power Automate workflows that reduced weekly Credit team approval times by 4 hours. He volunteers as a VITA tax preparer in Florence SC.
Davis writes Python, JavaScript, VBA, and SQL; builds n8n + Ollama agent systems and Power Automate workflows; and ships Power BI and Tableau dashboards. He is a Strategic AI Program Advisor at Furman University's Center for Innovative Leadership; a Student Representative on the SC Association of CPAs Growing the Profession Committee; and a Student Research Assistant on Dr. Christine Masters-Wheeler's Francis Marion University qualitative study on AI workflow implementations across nonprofit entities of varying scales. He founded the FMU Accounting and Finance Club.
Scope: process improvement, reporting, systems integration, and grant performance. Signing, attest, and audit work stays with your existing CPA — we partner with them, never replace them.
AKA is a pre-launch practice. Rather than fabricate proof, we're holding this space for real engagements. First case studies publish once we have signed client permission and validated outcomes — targeting late 2026.
In the meantime, our methodology walkthrough shows exactly how engagements unfold — with transparent sample deliverables clearly labeled as mockups, not client work.
